If you want a full bodied taste of the highlands that will linger in your memory then this is the tour. A cracking day out with so many high value sites to see as we make a loop through some of Scotland's most stunning territory.
The Keplies
Loch Lubnaig
Falls of Dochart
Finlarig Castle
Dunkeld
The bridges, South Queensferry
We start the day at the Mighty Kelpies. A monument to our old pal the horse. A fantastic place to start any tour and we will explain the significance of this sight and the meaning of 'Kelpie'.
We will pass by Stirling castle and the battlefield of Bannockburn. FREEDOM!!! This stretch of road is where some of the largest English armies ever assembled were ground into dust by enigmatic Scottish freedom fighters like Willam Wallace and Andrew Murray.
There are over 30,000 Lochs in this ribboned land we call home. As you gaze out at Loch Lubnaig you may think that it must be exceptional in its charm and beauty…. but…. I'm here to say it's not. They are all really quite stunning and different.
Kevin Costner would love this next part of the tour because….you guessed it, more water. This time it's moving rather fast, tumbling right through the center of a quaint little village called Killin. The falls of Dochart as it's known. Ancient burial site of the clan McNab. The town, not the river. Although (fun fact) their clan motto is “dreadnought” Which is what we named our Destroyer class ships in the Royal Navy. Finlarig Castle on the banks of the loch Tay is a romantic ruin with a fancinating past.
As we venture high over the mountains from Killin north east along Loch Tay we will be treated with some spectacular views. Much evidence has been found here in the shallow waters of a type of habitation used thousands of years ago by the ancient peoples of Scotland called a crannog. A House on the water. Good for defending from wolves, bears and rival tribes. Also great for fishing and views.
Onward to Dunkeld and some refreshment from one of the critically acclaimed bakeries right on the village high street. Dunkeld was an ancient capital of Scotland once upon a time and was used by an English playwright for the setting to his play, Macbeth. Think his name was Will something? Anyway, If you still want more water, you're in luck. Dunkeld or Dunstanane as Shakespeare called it sits on the banks of our longest river in Scotland, The Might Tay.
Homeward bound to Edinburgh with a last stop to admire our largest structures in Scotland, The bridges. Considered Engineering marvels. Each bridge was built in a different century.
Then into Edinburgh to drop you off at accommodation after a wonderful day out.
