Time to see the heart of the highlands learn about its history and peoples whilst experiencing the stunning landscape which shaped them. This is the right way to do it! 2 days to explore the highland territory with a night in the epicenter of highland culture, Inverness.
Day 1
After a morning coffee stop at the magnificent Kepies monument at Falkirk it’s not long before Stirling castle rises into view. This magnificent fortress is at the center of so much of Scotland's history. In particular it features heavily in the wars of independence and jacobite uprisings.
Soon after we will cross over the highland fault line and into the mountains and glens.
It’s obvious even on sunny days that this is a bonnie yet formidable landscape indeed.
We will take it all in and you may even wish to dip our toes in one of our 30,000 freezing cold lochs!
As we journey north we will cross over the Ranoch moor. A 50 square mile peat bog surrounded by mountains. A treacherous beguiling place indeed. Which is rather suitable as it is the ‘welcome mat’ to Glen Coe. A place haunted by the past events it has witnessed and its beauty. You don’t grow up in Scotland without learning about the ‘Glen coe massacre’ and you will find out why.
Lunch
Then it's North along the Great glen of Scotland. Taking in all 4 lochs which lie in its belly. Including the real monster! Loch Ness. The greatest single volume of water in the UK. As I heard a man say to his dog once, as it lapped the water from the loch.
“Dinnae worry son, ya wilnae drink it all!” truer words indeed have never been spoken.
Then it on to Inverness were you will be orientated and then dropped off at your accommodation.
Day 2
Pick up and then a short drive to the battlefield of Culloden. Where the last major battle on British soil took place in 1746. It was a pivotal moment in British and world history as after this moment Britain turned its eye to empire building. The highland story is colored by this moment more than any other before or since.
Alternatively, you can take in the sight of Fort George, the highland mega fortress built to make sure the highlander Jacobite's never rose up again. Calling it ‘Imposing’ would be an understatement. It's also possible to see the pod of bottle-nosed dolphins in the Moray Firth estuary from the battlements.
Clava cairns are very close by and worth a visit. Standing stones and burial chambers dating back to almost 4000 years ago. This historic site helps visitors to imagine the ancient, highly complex peoples who lived here and is truly a magical place. Unless of course you get thrown back in time to the Jacobian era and find love with a handsome highland warrior. Just saying!
Through the blue mountains we travel (Cairngorms) visiting the highland folk museum. It's not stuffy at all. Quite the opposite in fact. An open air museum with old buildings from throughout Scotland's history including: Clan village, a 19th century School house, black house and often highland cooz.
Maybe time for a wee dram of whisky then its down out of the mountains to the ancient village of Dunkeld.
Here you can stretch your legs by the banks of the mighty Tay river. Wonder round the cathedral and get something scrummy from one of the many award winning bakeries.
Finally a wee stop at the bridges to wrap up the tour and then into Edinburgh to drop you off after an amazing 2 days that you won’t forget.
